ATTENTION The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently announced Practice Guidelines which authorized physicians to utilize an exemption from certain certification requirements under the Controlled Substances Act to prescribe buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder. The
Practice Guidelines were sent to the Office of the Federal Register (OFR) on January 12, 2021, but were not yet published. It has been reported that the Biden Administration has delayed the implementation of the Practice Guidelines setting forth that exemption, as a
regulatory freeze has been implemented with respect to rules that have been sent to the OFR but not published, requiring that they be withdrawn for review [and approval]. This means that physicians who wish to prescribe buprenorphine for opioid use disorder must continue to adhere to the full DATA 2000 waiver requirements. HHS is expected to announce this reversal.

New Jersey's Board of Medical Examiners is responsible for protecting the public's health and safety by determining qualifications of applicants for licensure, establishing standards for practice, and disciplining licensees who do not adhere to those requirements. In addition to physicians and podiatrists, the Board licenses and certifies certain other health care professionals.

- Consumers can search for a physician or learn more about their current doctor by clicking onto the New Jersey Health Care Profile link. They may file a complaint, if necessary, about a physician or podiatrist or contact a member of the Medical Board's staff to check on the status of a complaint filed previously.
- Doctors and those in the process of becoming doctors can access online applications and renewal forms and learn more about our programs, their responsibilities, and the related activities of other agencies and organizations.
- Hospitals, managed care entities and other institutions can find access to verification services.
